Day 13 - Lucca and La Boheme

Today started off like any other day in Forte...beach, fun and chill, but boy did it end with a bang. After the beach we drove to Lucca, an amazing medieval walled town about 20 minutes from our hotel. Jimmy hired a horse + buggy to take us around. We became the main attraction, everywhere we went people were taking pictures of us....probably because we were stupid enough to fall for this tourist trap. We were the one and only horse and buggy. The driver showed us all the main attractions!

As day fell to night the anticipation grew for our evening’s activity...Puccini’s famous opera...La Boheme. To prepare, we all read the synopsis of the story so we wouldn’t be totally lost as the whole performance is in Italian. Interestingly, the play Rent is based on the opera la Boheme so our curiosity was peaked. Syd, Erin and I are all huge  Rent fans....

Upon arrival to Tourro del Laggo we realized we were a bit under dressed. Italians take their opera very seriously! After buying the most expensive tickets weeks in advance we were almost denied entry because Ryan and Jimmy were wearing shorts.

The setting was spectacular! An amazing open air theatre right beside a gorgeous lake... the night air was perfect.

At 9:15pm the lights dim and out comes the maestro, Daniel Oren (http://www.arena.it/en-US/PersonnelDetailen.html?idpersonnel=19), he is accompanied by a woman who walks him to his position with the orchestra. Not sure if this is a regular thing???...but after every intermission this happens. He then shakes hands with his first violinist and off he goes into a frenzied state of “maestrodom”.... Our curiosity is peaked because he is wearing a Kippah!!!

There are 4 acts and Ryan made it to the middle of the second act before he started yawning. It was an experience that none of us will ever forget and probably some of us will never want to experience again! Jimmy loved it, I really liked it, Syd, Erin and Ryan.....hmmmmm...they were troopers!!!
Notice the murse(man purse)..
